You have the towels neatly stored and the soaps are in their dishes on the rim of the tubs. The toothpaste and everyone’s toothbrushes have their holders. The laundry hamper is emptied regularly. It’s the clutter of jars, bottles, brushes, combs and other items that throng the top of the bathroom vanities that just won’t go away. How can you organize the countertop and make it look good? You need some help, but don’t worry. It’s not the kind of help you pay by the hour.

The key to getting and keeping control of the clutter on your family’s bathroom vanities is organization. To achieve this goal, you can employ several methods. My favorite is the baskets-in-a row plan. It consists of a set (not necessarily a matching) of wicker baskets that you line up in a row beneath the mirror. One holds items such as hairbrushes and combs. Another holds skin creams and facial cleansers. The third can hold razors and shaving creams, etc. The idea is to group items in baskets that are the right size and shape ensuring the contents can be easily seen and retrieved. Since each family member’s vanity counters accumulates differing items, the varied sizes and shapes of baskets is a way to keep a unified look but still be flexible in personalizing the storage to their needs.

There are lots of other ways to organize vanity top clutter. One of the best is to never let it get started. By providing a neatly organized set of wicker basket, or even plastic bins, to hold their belongings, you have a chance to emerge victorious in this war. Then keeping the bath clean will be less of a toothache and more of an everyday chore. Small victories do count.
